VISION ON DESIGN AND SOCIETY
Let’s talk about innovation.
When you look at innovation stripped down to its bare essence it is something we have been doing since the beginning of human existence. The definition of innovation can be related to creating something that is novel (in novare = introducing something new). It is however only been about hundred years that it is seen as a central value of society. When the term innovator first really came into existence in the sixteenth and seventeenth century it was a swear word for someone who was conflicting with the order, tradition and linearity of that society. While it then was mainly used in terms of religion and politics that changed in the nineteenth and twentieth century when it became a label for technological development and progression. Since then it has been hyped in literature, the academic world and associated with terms like creativity and originality. Innovation has become a slogan.
This indicates that, in all those years, innovation has gone beyond its purpose. The government wants to stimulate innovation within companies by, for example, investing in science- and technology education (innovation requires knowledge) and intellectual property (protect ownership). The main goal of this, eventually, is to lead to product innovation and improve the competitive power of a country and stimulate economic growth. It is however not with solely economic growth that we are going to solve the problems we face in nowadays society. Besides, the past years of crisis have only majorly slowed down the process of dealing with challenges like aging, obesity, food shortage and climate change.
It is time that a new model of innovation starts changing our ideas about policy making, prosperity and genuine progress. With this I aim for a type of innovation that focuses on self-empowerment and new forms of ownership, responsibility and sharing. Not with designs and services like ‘Uber’ and ‘Airbnb’ that only make profit from bringing supply and demand together, but with true sharing of skills and values in a multidisciplinary network than can operate contextually and use the creativity of individuals that is already present in society. Not with claiming ownership and isolation of ideas but with an open-source approach and a permanent self-directed learning attitude.

CORE VALUES
creativity: to create value
innovation: TO PUSH BOUNDARIES
With showing how designers can creatively come to different solutions in times of budget cuts and quick changes I hope to inspire people to reflect on their own potential and see how they can be part of a change in society.

A new vision on the future of society requires new ways of working to make that future possible. I think that the start of this change has to be made in education and policy making. Both these disciplines can benefit from an approach that focuses on capturing value rather than consult an answer to a question.
Regarding to education I have started to see that the old model of grading a performance cannot result in an attitude that is build upon an eagerness to learn and a critical view on the definition of problems. With that we cannot expect people to be creative when their progress is solely assessed on their capacity to do what is expected and reproduce existing knowledge. Seeing the value of how I have been educated I think that bringing elements of that way of learning need to be implemented in the reform of educational models. Initiatives like the Learning of the Move project are examples of how this can be realized. It requires a lot of patience and trial and error but I think that as a designer I should take the lead in implementing this. I have the ability to be a flexible connector of disciplines and develop methods these people can use to co-create value.
Whereas education can tap in on the development of younger generations, politics often deals with people who are stuck in a pattern that has not evolved for years. Trying to spark a creativity that not only focuses on the market and economic efficiency is hard and the potential of failure is not recognized. I think that it necessary to break that structure of preventing errors and stimulate people to think for themselves, think differently and get out of their comfort zone. This can be done within organizations where I can use my skills to bring people together and analyses a chaos of opinions methodologically to come to a joint solution. It can also be done by giving the example in showing a different approach to solving societal issues like I did in my B2.2. semester. In this way I hope to be a creative facilitator and empower people to see their individual potential in relation to each other and to society.
IDENTITY AS A DESIGNER
This video shows a nice and almost poetic view on how the importance of learning has been overshadowed by systems that focus on making tests and a view on society that is driven by performance and reproducing existing knowledge.
